1) EDGAR stands for Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval.

2) It is the electronic filing system created by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to increase the efficiency and accessibility of corporate filings, whether that is 10-K, 10-Q or 8-K reports.

3) The system is used for all publicly traded companies when reporting filings to the SEC. So, for instance, if you are interested in reading the financial performance of Google from its balance sheets, income statement or its statement of free cash flows, you can find the required data and information in the SEC filings, available free on EDGAR. 4) This makes EDGAR an invaluable asset and tool for investors. Accessing annual reports of companies for free is an amazing tool for conducting equity research and financial analysis. The creation of EDGAR has greatly decreased the time it takes for corporate documents to become publicly available.

5) The EDGAR database can be searched using company ticker symbol. EDGAR’s Companies & Other Filers Search will list a company's filings with the most recent filings shown first. Most of the filings made through EDGAR are available for download or can be viewed for free.
